Overview

Overview

The Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker Apprenticeship is designed for experienced care professionals who take on supervisory, mentoring and frontline leadership responsibilities alongside their hands-on care role. Over a typical duration of 18 months, apprentices develop the judgement, accountability and leadership skills needed to guide colleagues, oversee the quality of care delivered and support individuals to live with independence, dignity and choice. Whether your team operates in residential care, domiciliary settings, supported living or day services, this apprenticeship builds the senior practitioners who set the standard for person-centred care across your organisation.

Employer Benefits

Lead Adult Care Workers combine direct care delivery with supervisory responsibility. They are expected to exercise professional judgement, work autonomously and provide guidance, direction and mentoring to other members of the care team — while continuing to make a positive difference to the lives of the people they support.

This Level 3 apprenticeship covers a wide range of senior frontline roles, including Senior Care Worker, Care Supervisor, Care Officer, Senior Support Worker, Relief Team Leader, Social Work Assistant, Community Support Worker and Family Support Worker. These roles can specialise across areas such as learning disability, mental health, dementia, end-of-life care, drug and alcohol misuse and homecare. The standard also covers Lead Personal Assistants who work at a senior level directly for one individual, typically in their own home.

The programme typically lasts 18 months and leads to a Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, with end-point assessment confirming occupational competence. Apprentices who do not already hold Level 2 English and maths must achieve this prior to their end-point assessment.

All apprentices must meet the standards set out in the Care Certificate and complete an Enhanced DBS check before starting.

Like the Level 2 standard, the programme is built around the 6Cs — Care, Compassion, Courage, Communication, Competence and Commitment — but at Level 3 these values are applied with greater autonomy and an expectation that the Lead Adult Care Worker will model and promote them across the wider team.

This apprenticeship is a natural progression from the Level 2 Adult Care Worker standard and provides a strong foundation for further career development into management roles such as the Level 5 Leader in Adult Care.

Whats Covered

The Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker standard is structured around six key themes. At this level, each theme builds on the Level 2 requirements by adding leadership, mentoring and greater professional autonomy.

Tasks and Responsibilities — Lead apprentices develop the ability to create, monitor and review person-centred care plans, not just contribute to them. They learn to lead and support colleagues in complying with regulations and organisational policies, take the initiative when working outside normal duties, guide and mentor team members, and facilitate specialist assessments for individuals with cognitive, sensory or physical impairments. Establishing informed consent and ensuring individuals are active participants in their own care are central expectations.

Values and Behaviours — Building on the dignity and respect foundations of Level 2, Lead Adult Care Workers are expected to actively champion equality, diversity and inclusion within the team. They model empathy and person-centred practice, and demonstrate the courage to support individuals in ways that may challenge their own cultural or personal beliefs — while supporting colleagues to do the same.

Communication — At this level, apprentices are expected not only to communicate effectively themselves but to promote excellent communication across the team. This includes identifying and resolving barriers to communication, facilitating preferred communication methods, understanding the role of advocates, maintaining clear and concise records, and leading others to keep confidential information safe in accordance with agreed ways of working.

Safeguarding — Lead apprentices take on a more active leadership role in safeguarding. They support colleagues to recognise and respond to potential signs of abuse, work in partnership with external agencies, lead others in addressing conflicts between an individual's rights and the duty of care, and recognise, report, respond to and record unsafe practices — encouraging others to do the same through established whistleblowing procedures.

Health and Wellbeing — This theme extends to leading and mentoring others in promoting wellbeing. Apprentices develop the ability to manage infection prevention and control practices, develop and apply person-centred risk assessments (including safe moving and handling), promote healthy eating and nutrition, carry out and manage fire safety procedures, and monitor, report and respond to changes in the health and wellbeing of the individuals they support.

Professional Development — At Level 3, there is a strong emphasis on leading by example. Apprentices are expected to evaluate and improve their own skills through reflective practice and supervision, contribute to the development plans of colleagues, demonstrate mentoring and supervisory capability, carry out research relevant to individuals' support needs, contribute to robust recruitment and induction processes, and sustain a positive attitude while recognising signs of stress in themselves and others.

Together, these KSBs ensure that Lead Adult Care Workers finishing the programme are equipped to be the senior practitioners who drive quality, lead by example and embed a culture of compassionate, person-centred care across their service.
