Make an enquiry Or, arrange a call back with our team →The Level 5 Leader in Adult Care Apprenticeship is designed for managers and senior leaders responsible for running adult care services. Over a typical duration of 18 months, apprentices develop the strategic, operational and leadership capabilities needed to manage teams, ensure regulatory compliance and drive a values-based culture across their service. Whether you manage a residential home, a domiciliary care operation, a community day centre or a supported living service, this apprenticeship equips your leaders with the knowledge, skills and professional confidence to deliver safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led services.
Leaders in Adult Care are the people who guide and inspire teams to make a positive difference in the lives of adults facing physical, practical, social, emotional, psychological or intellectual challenges. They are responsible not only for the quality and safety of frontline care, but also for business development, financial control, organisational resilience, risk management and leading change.
This Level 5 apprenticeship is aimed at those in — or stepping into — roles such as Registered Manager, Deputy Manager, Assistant Manager, Unit Manager or Service Manager. It also covers Personal Assistants operating in a management capacity for a single individual. Apprentices may be based in residential or nursing homes, domiciliary care, community day centres, a person's own home or clinical healthcare settings.
The programme typically lasts 18 months and leads to a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care, with end-point assessment confirming occupational competence. Apprentices who do not already hold Level 2 English and maths must achieve this prior to completion. All apprentices must undertake the Disclosure and Barring Service process before starting.
As with the Level 2 and Level 3 adult care standards, the programme is anchored by the 6Cs — Care, Compassion, Courage, Communication, Competence and Commitment. At Level 5, however, the expectation shifts decisively from practising these values individually to embedding them across an entire service — developing and implementing a values-based culture that shapes how every member of the team works.
This apprenticeship represents the natural progression from the Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker standard and provides a strong platform for senior leadership careers in health and social care, including CQC Registered Manager roles.
The Level 5 Leader in Adult Care standard is structured around seven key themes. At this level, the focus shifts from personal practice and team supervision to strategic leadership, systems design and organisational culture.
Tasks and Responsibilities — Leaders develop a thorough understanding of statutory frameworks, standards and codes of practice that govern adult care services. They learn to design and apply the systems and processes needed to ensure regulatory compliance, manage resources effectively and sustain quality across assessments, care plans and service delivery. A strong emphasis is placed on risk management, outcome-based practice and leading a person-centred approach that enables active participation and co-production — involving both staff and the people who access care and support in how the service operates.
Dignity and Human Rights — At Level 5, the expectation moves beyond personal practice to organisational culture. Leaders are responsible for developing and implementing practices that actively champion dignity, diversity, inclusion and fairness across the workplace. They must also cultivate a culture where staff have the courage to work in ways that may challenge their own cultural and belief systems — embedding these principles as organisational norms, not just individual behaviours.
Communication — Leaders develop and implement organisational processes for clear, concise record-keeping and information governance. A key competence at this level is the ability to translate policy and guidance into accessible, understandable information for a range of audiences — including people who access care and support, their families and carers, and professional colleagues. They also use a range of tools and strategies, including technology, to enhance communication across the service.
Safeguarding — Leaders are expected to build organisational capability in safeguarding. This means implementing training and support systems that enable colleagues to recognise and respond to potential signs of abuse and unsafe practices, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of safeguarding policies and procedures, and creating a culture that actively supports whistleblowing and timely intervention.
Health and Wellbeing — This theme focuses on strategic ownership of health, safety and risk management. Leaders implement policies, procedures and practices to ensure compliance with legislation and create a culture that values health and wellbeing. They are also expected to monitor, evaluate and continuously improve these policies and practices — moving from doing to designing and driving improvement.
Professional Development — Leaders are expected to apply evaluated research and evidence-based practice in their own setting, take the initiative to research and disseminate current developments in adult care, and embed systems for performance improvement through supervision, reflective practice and learning opportunities. This theme also covers the ability to create a culture that values continuous learning and professional development for every member of the team.
Leadership — The standard includes a dedicated leadership theme that requires apprentices to understand and apply theories of management and leadership in an adult care context. Leaders must demonstrate a well-developed awareness of their own behaviour and its impact on others, model a values-based culture, create a supportive environment that values initiative and innovation, recognise the contributions of team members, and lead effective team performance.
Together, these KSBs ensure that Leaders in Adult Care finishing the programme are equipped to run services that are not only compliant and safe, but genuinely well-led — with the strategic capability, professional judgement and cultural influence to drive sustained improvement and deliver outstanding care.
